Passport Photo Size by Country: Complete Guide (mm, inches & pixels)

Every country sets its own passport photo rules, and the size is the first thing that gets a photo rejected. This guide lists the passport photo size by country in millimetres, inches and pixels, so you can make the right photo the first time.

Important: requirements change. Use this as a quick reference and confirm with your government's official passport website before you submit.

How to convert mm to pixels

Print shops and online forms usually expect 300 DPI (dots per inch). The formula is:

pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × 300

So 35 mm becomes 413 px and 45 mm becomes 531 px. Online application portals sometimes ask for a specific pixel size or file size — follow their instructions exactly.

Head size and position

Size isn't only the outer frame. Most countries also specify how big your head should be — often 70–80% of the photo's height from chin to crown, centred, looking straight at the camera. A face guide helps you get this right.

Make a correct passport photo at home

  1. Stand in front of a plain wall in soft, even daylight.
  2. Have someone take the photo at eye level, about 1–2 metres away.
  3. Open the free Passport Photo Maker, upload the photo and let AI replace the background.
  4. Choose your country's size, align your face with the oval guide and download.
  5. Print the 4×6 inch sheet at 100% scale at any photo shop — you get several copies for the price of one print.
