How to Remove the Background from a Photo on iPhone & Android

You don't need a laptop — or even an app — to remove a background. Modern phones can do basic cutouts on their own, and a browser-based tool can handle the rest. Here's how to remove the background from a photo on iPhone and Android.

Option 1: Use a free browser tool (iPhone and Android)

This is the most flexible method because you get a full-resolution PNG, custom backgrounds and touch-up brushes — without installing anything.

  1. Open Pixmoo in Safari, Chrome or any mobile browser.
  2. Tap Upload Image and choose a photo from your library (or take one with the camera).
  3. Wait a few seconds for the AI to remove the background. The first image takes a little longer while the model loads; after that it's cached.
  4. Pick a background color or keep it transparent.
  5. Tap Download. On iPhone the file is saved to Files/Downloads — tap it and choose Save Image to put it in Photos.
Tip: Add the site to your home screen (Share → Add to Home Screen) so it opens like an app.

Option 2: iPhone's built-in subject lift

On recent iPhones you can lift a subject straight out of a photo:

  1. Open the photo in the Photos app.
  2. Touch and hold the main subject until a glowing outline appears.
  3. Tap Copy to paste it elsewhere, Share to send it, or drag it into another app.

It's great for quick stickers and messages. Limitations: you can't fine-tune the edges or pick a new background, and it may not detect the subject in busy photos. You can paste the copied cutout into Pixmoo to add a background.

Many Android phones include a similar feature. On Samsung Galaxy devices, open a photo in Gallery, long-press the subject and choose Copy or Save as image. Google Photos on Pixel phones offers editing tools that can separate the subject in some cases. Exact names vary by brand and Android version, so if your phone doesn't support it, the browser method works everywhere.

Tips for better mobile cutouts

  • Shoot in good light — phones add noise in the dark, which blurs edges.
  • Keep the subject in focus and away from the wall.
  • Use the main (1×) camera rather than digital zoom.
  • Zoom into the result with two fingers before downloading to check the hair and edges.

Summary

For a quick sticker, your phone's built-in cutout is fine. For anything you'll publish — product photos, profile pictures, thumbnails — use Pixmoo in your mobile browser for full control and full resolution. New to transparency? Start with how to make an image background transparent.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install an app to remove a background on my phone?

No. Pixmoo works in Safari, Chrome and other mobile browsers, so there is nothing to install.

Why does the long-press cutout on iPhone not work on my photo?

The feature needs a clearly defined subject and a supported device and iOS version. For difficult photos, use a browser tool with manual refine brushes.

Can I add a new background on my phone?

Yes. In Pixmoo, choose any color, a gradient or upload a photo from your gallery as the new background.
